Fashion week has been and gone and it is time to announce what is on trend, in the spotlight and has been sartorially successful over the last few weeks. This is a great opportunity for you to get inspired, and bring the fun into your style.
Do this with caution though, trends can be fickle. Your style is such a personal expression and exploration of you so do make sure that the trends you choose speak to you. It really is a great way to feel current, push yourself out of your comfort zone and an opportunity to try something that you will make your day feel a little special.
This Autumn, is is time to:
GET FUNCTIONAL WITH FASHION
If you have never been into fashion, now might be the time to make an introduction as fashion is having its moment in the casual and rather practical spotlight. Think sensible footwear like loafers, mules and trainers, see the ones below from COS. Comfort items like sweaters, tracksuit bottoms and grown up classics like trench coats, shirts and high waisted trousers. The skinny, body con shapes have lost their appeal and looser silhouettes have prominence. This gives you a great opporutnityt o get the most from your wardrobe. Dress up your trainers with tailored trousers and dress down your leather skirt with a tracksuit top.
Great for you if: You live a practical life but you want to still be fashionable

BEJEWEL YOURSELF WITH BOLD AND BRASSY EARRINGS
To counter the rather sensible clothing that is around bold and overstated earrings are very prominent. Designer J.W.Anderson had some great earrings on show at London Fashion Week, try these ones from Zara as a high street alternative or from Hackney designer Wolf and Moon. This extravagance is a great way to pick up on a trend without spending a fortune. This could also be a great opportunity to find some vintage pieces that are lying unloved and unused. Get your glitz on but keep everything else simple and functional.

GO WIDE
The reappearance of the cullote last year has proved very popular and they are here to stay but they are going full length or at least ankle skimming for winter. There are a wide range of styles available from just below the knee to mid calf and we are now seeing a lot of very cool ankle skimming styles with great high waists. (see below pair from COS). I would really encourage you to try this new silohuette. So flattering, fun and comfy! A little touch of tailoring will help you to upgrade your style for this season.
Great for you if: You want to feel dressy but not prim.

LIVE ON THE EDGE
Denim is having an interesting time at the moment, rough edges, fringing, two-tone and stepped cuffs (see Monki and ASOS ones below) are proving very popular. The fit of the jean stays quite classic with a straight leg, sometimes tapered into the ankle, the waist a good mid to high-rise but its the bottom hem and edging that takes the focus. Have fun at home and update your old jeans.

10 Secrets that will Help You Feel like You have a New Wardrobe.

57c5a27f1700001a00c76687.jpg
A lot of us wish that we dressed with more character, style and passaz and blame our clothes and lack of time as the trouble makers for our uninspired appearance.
I am here to help you perk up your style and help you realise that there is a lot more excitement in your wardrobe than you give it credit for.
Here are some of my secrets on how to be a little more creative with your style from the clothes you already own:
  1. Give a crap. You are not going to start looking good, unless you start to care, even if just a little. You’ve got to put in a little effort and I promise you, you will reap the benefits.
  2. Clear the crap. Do you know what you own? There are probably hidden gems in there. So put some time aside and go through what you own and get rid of clothes that you are bored of/don’t fit/make you feel uncomfortable.
  3. Wear something old. That dress that you keep saying, ‘I’ll wear it one day’, bite the bullet and wear it tomorrow. I it doesn’t make you feel wonderful then say ‘ta ta for now’.
  4. Dress how you want to feel. Pick your intention for the day, how do you want to feel today. Empowered? Happy? Fearless? Sassy? Whatever it may be dress for that feeling rather than what you currently feel.
  5. #30secondstyle. Take an extra 30 seconds to put on a necklace/pair of earrings/scarf/bracelet, apply some lippy, those small daily touches will lift any outfit and that attention to detail will give you the character you desire. Join us on Instagram and share your quick style fix.
  6. Make a sandwich. ‘Sandwiching’ is wearing all one colour e.g. navy with a flash of a complimentary colour e.g. Yellow. Try a new combo of your clothes today.
  7. Print clashing is a really fun way to be more creative with the clothes you already own. Follow my Pinterest to board for inspiration.
  8. Look Up. Keep your head up and appreciate the beauty that is all around and spot what others are wearing and try and emulate it.
  9. Tailor your life. Get the most out of your wardrobe and feel more put together by wearing your dressy clothes everyday. Add a pair of high tops and a casual t-shirt to your smart trousers for a fun but considered everyday look.
  10. Have fun. Fashion should be expressive, style should be about you. If you wear clothes you love, get a little more dressed up than normal and try new combo’s of clothing that already exist in your wardrobe you will find you will start to shine. For inspiration follow me on Instagram.

Seven Reasons you should start dressing like your mum

By | Latest Articles

How long have you been rebelling against your mum and her style? Conservative, sensible attire that felt boring and uninspiring, so out of trend and unfashionable. I’d like to propose to you that perhaps we’ve been seeing this classic look wrong all along. Perhaps, dare I say, our mothers are on to something and we’ve been missing the point. I believe, and it’s a recent belief, that has come to me from becoming a mum myself that my beautiful mama and my granny Annie may be on to something and its time for me to stop rebelling and heed their advice.

So here are my seven reasons, taken from advice given to me over the years, as to why I think you should start dressing like your mum and I think these reasons, regardless of your age are going to help you to feel stylish and gorgeous everyday.

Wear Lipstick

It reminds us of all the kisses on the cheek that we’ve been given over the years encouraging us on our way, making us feel secure and ready to face the glorious challenges ahead but its also the quickest and fastest and probably most affordable way to update and refresh your look. Just don’t forget to wipe the lipstick from your teeth!

Add more tailoring into your wardrobe.

Are you dressed for the job and life of your dreams. Do you desire being a stylish, well put together, purposeful dresser? If so the key to this is to add in some tailoring into your life, even if you live a very relaxed life. Your mum was correct when she used to tell you that ‘you can be anything you want to be when you grow up’. So I encourage you to step away from the leggings, trainers and baggy t-shirts and add in blazers, long-line coats, tailored trousers and structured dresses and go take hold of those dreams.

Get dressed everyday and make everyday special.

Are you making everyday feel special? If not, why not? You deserve and are worthy of feeling gorgeous everyday. I believe we should add a bit of glam, sparkle and fun into our everyday lives. Annie holds her self to a high standard that she expects in everything she does and she is prepared for everything that may come her way. Get ready people your life is waiting for you!

Keep it classic.

If you’ve tried many trends over the years and you are still unsure of what your style is, what to buy or what to wear then perhaps it is time to go classic. Just like a good old G’n’T at 6pm; simple, fresh and classic can be the best option. Get the foundations right in your wardrobe so that you can then get more creative with your style and truly express yourself.

Stick to a colour palette.

Life is busy, get your wardrobe working for you by sticking with a colour palette that you love and brings out the emotions you want to feel on a day to day basis. The key to your success though is to be conscious of the colours you choose. Be purposeful with the colours you buy and be aware of what it missing in your wardrobe. A well balanced colour palate will mean everything works together and you will have something for every emotion.

Buy less, buy well, buy with focus.

It is well known that quality lasts, however I believe its a bit like falling love. Don’t compromise on the enjoyment it (they) bring(s). When you buy something it must make you feel good, feel special, feel wonderful. Also a bit like finding a partner be discerning with what you want. No point dating a farmer when you hate the outdoors. Keep the focus on what is missing in your wardrobe and don’t get sidetracked!

Keep your trousers and skirts high waisted.

“Have a little modesty dear.” For the smoothest silhouette in all the land, heed your mothers advice and buy high rise trousers and skirts. If you’re feeling particularly fancy I do suggest popping on a belt with those trousers and jeans to ensure that your heavenly bottom is kept snug and warm inside your trousers, truly enhanced by your attire.

So there it is, the 7 reasons to start dressing like your mum. Our mums have spend so long mastering their own look, they’ve done the trial and error, they’ve done the ground work and provided us with a foundation to work from so its probably best we save ourselves some time!

Want to reinvent your style then just get BUSY!

By | Latest Articles

Source: sorayabakhtiar.com

I’m going to make this snappy. You shouldn’t be reading this, you should be working/cooking/sleeping/talking to your friends/interacting with your children/brushing your teeth but you are completely distracted right now, probably trying to hide away from your reality in a little pocket of social media land.

So hello, while I have your attention let me teach you how to get back into your reality and reconnect with yourself through your style. In fact its all about getting busy. In just four easy steps, or by implementing the BUSY technique you can start to change how you see your wardrobe but most importantly shift how you feel about yourself.

So lets get BUSY

Be Mindful. The key reason you don’t know what your style is, is that you have lost a connection with how you want to feel in your clothes. You put on the same clothes day in, day out. Start a clothing journal. Take a snap, open your notes on your phone and write down 3-5 words of how you looked & felt in your clothing.

Use Feeling to lead the way. The next step is to stop dressing for what you are currently feeling and start dressing for the feeling you want to feel. If you want to feel more focused, wear clothing that is structured and directional (just don’t knock anyone out with those shoulder pads!) if you want to feel more joyful, then a whimsical print is for you. Use clothing to fill the void.

Shop with intention. Reduce the overwhelm by only shopping for items on your shopping list. Make sure you have a clear idea before you hit the store about what it is you are looking for. If you don’t know what you are after then just shop for inspiration with no pressure to purchase.

You are the answer. It can be very easy to say ‘Stop seeking perfection and see your beauty’ but if you don’t feel it, its a habit that must be trained not switched on. With that in mind. Whilst brushing your teeth each morning find one thing you like about yourself and get practising with that change in mind set!

Remember if you want to start feeling differently about yourself you have to start doing something differently. So get BUSY and see how a more aware and proactive approach to dressing can make a change in your life!

The 5 Reasons why changing your wardrobe will change your life

By | Home Page, Latest Articles, Personal Style, Style Tips, Wardrobe Detox

Change happens; We wish change would happen to us, we wish change hadn’t happened to us, we are finding change hard to deal with. Whatever your status at the moment, the chances are life is occurring and you need to be prepared to take it on.

That is often easier said than done but I believe by reinventing what you wear and how you wear it, that change in your appearance will help you to make the shift to be truly prepared to take on the life that you are going through. Just like when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, you’ve got to be dressed with your wings on ready so that you can soar high.

If you are not convinced then read on, here are my 5 reasons WHY you should change your wardrobe when you change your life:

1. Welcome the New You.
Your wardrobe is full of old clothes, old memories and old associations. It it important for you to start to realise that the person that used to wear those has evolved, moved on and an updated more fabulous person exists in her place.

Perhaps you have a new job, or you’ve taken the plunge to start your on business? Perhaps you are a new mum? Perhaps you have recently got divorced or your kids have left home and you are now a free spirit. Whatever your challenge. Work out who are you? What do you want the world to see? Your wardrobe should evolve with you, come along for the ride and show off who you truly are.

2. Shake off the old.
That dress you love to wear that reminds you of THAT holiday, that night, that boy (who then met that other girl) is a beautiful thing. Those memories are dear but those memories aren’t going anywhere and come on be honest with yourself, there is small tinge of pain that exists there. “Oh I was young then, oh I was beautiful then, Oh I was happy then.” Well goddamit you are vital, gorgeous and resilient and the new you is going to be even happier. Stop dragging yourself down with the memories of the old and start dressing to create the dreams of the future.

3. Fake it until you make it.
Everyone has to start somewhere. Have you heard the saying “if you walk like a General and you talk like a General, then you are a General”. Well I want to add to that “dress like a General”. Use your clothes as a way of realising that you can handle the change that is coming your way. Even if you are quivering at the knees inside with the right uniform you will be ready for the change in your life.

4. Take Action.
Get inspired, plan, organise and then SHOP.
Regardless if you are causing change in your life or change is happening to you by taking some action you can see that you are in control of the situation but I warn you don’t just go in to the shops and hope you’ll find the new you. I can assure you she won’t just be sat in the window. So have a look around, get on Pinterest, follow me on Instagram @thestylingstorey and get inspired. Plan who you want to be, clean out your wardrobe (do you even know what’s in there?) and then you can shop and hey Presto NEW YOU.

5. Live the dream.
The final reason to change your wardrobe when you change your life is that you are worthy of your dream. Dreams and desires matter, they shape our perception, they shape why we get up in the morning, they shape what keeps us awake at night. So when you dress yourself everyday if you feel that your clothes do not match the change you wish to see in your life then I believe its time to change your wardrobe.
You are worthy of all the happiness you desire and I believe its time to start looking after you.

How to spring clean your style when you have a life

By | Home Page, Personal Style, Style Tips, Wardrobe Detox

Style Confidence: How to spring clean your style

You’re busy, life is full to the brim and you don’t have hours to dedicate to weekly decluttering and alphabetising your wardrobe by brand, I get it.

You would like to have more control over your style, gain a bit more clarity with what’s in your wardrobe and move on from the clothes that no longer showcase you.

Read on for the quickest, most impactful and unexpected ways to help you get organised. Spend 5 minutes a day tackling one of these and in no time you will feel great in your clothes and feeling back in control.

Step 1. Tidy your knicker drawer
Start small. Organise the drawer you use most frequently; your knicker, lingerie, sock, undergarment drawer, whatever you choose to call it, get it looking pretty. To do that, say goodbye to those holey socks, that sexy thong you’ve not worn in the last 15 years and the crazy pattern tights that you just aren’t you.

Marie Kondo’s vertical folding is the best underwear organisation. Check out this video on how to do it.
Then move on to shoes, accessories and bags at which point you’ll be emboldened and ready to make the leap to your clothes.

Step 2. Wear something old.
When you struggle to find the time to do a full wardrobe detox then do it one piece at a time by wearing your forgotten pieces, pair them up with something new and see how you feel in that item during your day.

If it turns your day into a joyful one then say hello to a new staple but if you are reminded of why its been hiding for so long then don’t put it back in the wardrobe, say thank you and goodbye.

Step 3. 3 things a day
If you find yourself being indecisive with what to keep and what to get rid of then put the pressure on by setting a goal of getting rid of 3 things a day. A manageable deadline will keep momentum happening without overwhelming you. Just make sure you stick to it and remember if it’s not helping you to thrive then it may help someone else.
Some great selling sites to be aware of: Ebay, vestaire collective, smart works charity (old suiting and work clothes), debop (trend and high street) and seek out your local preloved store.

Step 4. Colour your wardrobe
To feel like you own lots of new clothes the best thing you can do without spending is to move them around. For the ultimate breath of fresh air to your wardrobe then organise your wardrobe into colour order. When your clothes are in rainbow order (remember ROYGBIV) you can see exactly what you own, a great visual cleanse. Not only does it make you aware of which colours you keep buying but it also encourages you to keep your wardrobe looking pretty, which in turn is a far easier way to make you feel pretty!

Step 5. Spring clean social
If none of this sounds fun then its time to throw a party. It will turn getting rid of your clothes from what may be a stressful event to a fun night out with your friends. Having fresh eyes look over what you own can often shed new light on old clothes and you never know your cast offs may help a friend feel special with a new piece of clothing.

Lastly once all that is done enjoy your wardrobe, enjoy your clothes and enjoy the control being firmly back in your hands as you will now be able to start truly wearing it like you.

The secrets you need to know to feel contemporary everyday

By | Personal Style, Style Tips, Wardrobe Detox

We live in a world where we have to be prepared for everything and anything, everyday. Our clothes have to take us from school run to commute, to Skype conference call to a meal out. Our wardrobes have to work hard for us and on top of that we want to feel good, feel authentic, feel appropriate all whilst feeling contemporary in our clothes. Sounds like a big ask but the secret to feeling cool and edgier in a practical way is simpler that you may think.

The secret is mastering the art of smart casual dressing.

This is where most people struggle; its the middle ground of dressing that is becoming a bigger part of our lives. With many of us working in increasingly more casual environments we no longer need to be in suits but that can often mean we go too far the other way and we live in the ‘old favourite’ jeans and jumpers with very little variety. It’s no wonder that so many feel disconnected from their style, craving to feel ‘put together’, dreaming of discovering and communicating their contemporary, edgy side.

If this sounds like you then take note:

Secret 1: Opposites attract

Probably the most important element when creating a smart casual look is to put opposites together. This is the tip that all stylists work by. Do as it says; match smart & casual. Dressy skirt with a casual t-shirt and trainers or jeans with a blouse and blazer.

Think about pairing feminine and masculine together, its also important to include a moment of calm with your outfitting. A tailored navy trousers & brogues (masculine) with a white t-shirt (moment of calm), pink coat and a silk neckerchief (feminine) would be a great everyday look.

Secret 2: Everyday luxuries

The better the quality of your clothes, the simpler you can keep it. This will ensure that minimum effort gives you maximum appeal. If you also focus on adding a touch of decadence into your everyday wardrobe you will even make a Monday feel special. This does not mean you have to spend a fortune on cashmere, you can add small touches such as a lace trim or a flash of velvet and you will elevate and feminise your clothing.

Secret 3: Dress to impress yourself

So often our attire shifts and changes depending on who we are meeting up with. We are more concerned about what the other person might think of us rather than what we think of ourselves. Start dressing to impress you, wow yourself and stop getting in the way of feeling gorgeous everyday by putting on the same old clothes.

Secret 4: Dress smarter than you want to feel

Don’t save it for best, wear it now. Make today special and live in your best clothes. If you live in jeans and t-shirts then you can quickly lift your outfitting to the next level by adding in some tailoring. A knee length blazer and a wide leg pair of trousers would be a great addition to every wardrobe.

Secret 5: Do something different

If you want to feel differently in your clothes, wear something different. You can help yourself by moving things around in your wardrobe, see what new combinations you could wear tomorrow and notice how you feel in them.

There you go. Good luck and remember that once smart casual has been mastered you will be amazed at how your wardrobe will open up with so many more options. You’ll be prepared for everything and anything AND you’ll be shimmying down the street with effortless style.

And if you are ever in doubt, just ask ‘what would Garance wear?’ (see photo)

How to wear it like you everyday

By | Style Tips

It may not be the case for everyone but a lot of us wish that we dressed with more character, style and passaz and blame our clothes and lack of time as the trouble makers for our samey, uninspired bland appearance.

Well I am here to help you perk up those bland clothes and support you in the realisation that there is a lot more excitement in that wardrobe than you give it credit for. Here are my top tips on how to be a little more creative with your style from the clothes you already own:

  1. Clear the crap. I know its boring but you may have forgotten what you own, there are probably hidden gems in there. So if you can put some time aside and go through what you own and get rid of clothes that you are bored of/don’t fit/make you feel uncomfortable it will make your life a lot easier.
  2. Surround yourself with things that make you feel good. That dress that you keep saying, ‘I’ll wear it one day’, bite the bullet and wear it today and if it doesn’t make you feel wonderful then say ‘ta ta for now’ and give it to charity where it can go to a new home. This is also a great option if you don’t have time to clear the clutter, aim to wear everything in your wardrobe and cull your clothes one by one!
  3. Think ahead and dress how you want to feel. As you are going to sleep at night and rushing through your mind are all those thoughts about the emails you haven’t replied to or the cleaning you haven’t done, fill your mind with a more colourful thought; Pick your intention for the day and match a colour with it. Choose an item from your wardrobe of that colour and build your outfit from that.
  4. Take Care. Take an extra 30 seconds to put on a necklace/pair of earrings/scarf/bracelet, those small touches will lift any outfit and that attention to detail will give you the character you desire. Just don’t wear them all at once!! Less is more.
  5. Have fun with new combo’s. Think about ‘sandwiching’ (wearing all one colour e.g. navy with a flash of a complimentary colour e.g. Yellow) ‘going tonal’ (wearing all of one colour in different shades) or use one piece as the inspiration and build an outfit around a fav scarf and picking the colours out from it.
  6. Print clashing is a really fun way to be more creative. The key to it is to choose 2 pieces of clothing with exactly the same colours but ensure one has a larger print than the other & instant interest in your outfit.
  7. Look around you, be inspired. Keep your head up and appreciate the beauty that is all around and spot what others are wearing or or if you are surrounded by nappies, dive into Pinterest for inspiration and try to recreate it with what you already own.
  8. Wear it all. Get the most out of your wardrobe by wearing your dressy clothes everyday. Take a little risk and wear those dressy trousers with some white high tops, a white T-shirt and a denim jacket or wear your casual sweatshirt jumper with a stunning necklace, some jeans and pumps. Don’t forget you to wear those summer jackets as cardi’s in the winter under oversized coats.
  9. Have fun with length. A longer top/cardi/kimono/jacket can make a pair of everyday jeans/leggings feel a lot more glamorous, give you a dose of cool and help lengthen out the curves.
  10. At least one pop of colour. If all else fails, keep it simple, wear the basics & like my granny Annie says just pop some lippy on and it will perk up any outfit (or at least distract from it)!
