Top 5 : Coloured Biker Jackets

Top 5 : Coloured Biker Jackets

My favourite thing that I own in my wardrobe is my Schott Leather Jacket (see similar here). It’s practically a second skin and it will be handed down as a family heirloom!

It’s my most recommended piece for adding edge into your wardrobe.

However the classic black biker leather jacket can often be too harsh, especially heading into spring so with this in mind I’d recommend investing in a coloured biker jacket.

The exciting thing about this shape is that it is everywhere, in many different guises. It is such a classic that most brands have their version. Meaning whatever your budget or taste or brand affiliation you can find the one that is right for you.

There are benefits to both the lower and more affordable price points. You have to decide what you need from the jacket. The cheaper high street end of the scale allow you to have seasonal updates in the colours you love and it also means you can play around with the shape until you are ready to invest. The higher price point pieces are those heirlooms, the pieces you hold dear to your heart. They are good quality and will really elevate your everyday wardrobe.

Thing to consider:

-The length: Crop styles are very useful if you want to wear with dresses and skirts and you like to give definition to your waist.

– If you have broader shoulders stick to the softer fabrics with less structure so as not to add bulk

– don’t worry about doing it up, they are generally designed to be worn open.

Wherever you buy it from if you find the right colour and fit, it will rarely be off your back.

Take a look at the 5 ways to style the coloured biker and my favourite places to buy one!

Top 5 Socks

Top 5 Socks

So I have news.

You don’t have a shoe issue, you have a sock issue.

No more cold ankles, no more brogues feeling not practical for the weather, no more boring, unimaginative outfits.

This is one of the most common problems I see time and time again. Clients love the cropped trouser look, or a brogue and a jean but they struggling to find shoes to cover their ankles. However add a sock and your outfit will go from flat to perky.

Remember a good outfit that is full of personalist is often due to the details.

& socks are a great detail. Just pocking out from under your jeans, hardly seen but they say so much about you.

Socks give you the ability to say luxury, say party, say mischief, say fun, say flare.

Here are some of my favourite ways to add that touch of flare, polish and consideration and my top 5 shops to buy them from.

The 6 pieces that revolutionised my wardrobe

The 6 pieces that Revolutionised my wardrobe

I’ve revolutionised my own wardrobe alongside working with my clients.

Here are the 6 pieces that I’ve added into my wardrobe that have equated to over 20 new outfits.

Finding your hero pieces and stepping out of your comfort zone will really impact your day to day. You will see yourself expand into a new and more confident you but most importantly will make your wardrobe work harder.

This is the key to a healthy, highly functioning wardrobe. Everything working together, giving you endless outfitting options. As one of my clients in New York stated ‘I now own 1/2 as much but have twice as much to wear’.

Reduce how overwhelmed you feel each day by knowing everything in your wardrobe works together.

The clothes in my wardrobe work hard for me and the latest editions are the same. When I buy something I instantly think of 5 things that already exist in my wardrobe that I could pair it with and I’m excited to wear it straight away.

When you are reading this have a think about what you need to buy this Spring to revolutionise your style.

But remember go bold, go practical and shop up!

Buy your own version (or the same, I don’t mind) & see your own wardrobe and style revolutionise right in front of you!

1. A Coloured Tailored Trouser

Joseph Red Trousers (Sold Out) £200

The reason you need them

If you keep reaching for a pair of jeans and you feel so uninspired day to day then go out and get yourself a coloured trouser. What colour makes you feel most powerful, your own superhero. Go and find them. Orange, Pink, purple, green it doesn’t matter but just stye away from the denim!

Find your version here:

Arket Cotton Twill Workwear Trouser,Maison Margiela Pink Trouser,DVF Green TrouserMango Lilac Trouser,  Mango Red Contrast Seam Trousers

2. A sock boot

Zara Red Sock Boot £69.99

The reason you need them

Shoe trends tend to be a year or so behind trouser trends. We’ve been seeing trousers get wider, shorter more cropped but we’ve had few boots thin enough to balance out the width. The sock boot does just that. Soft fabric, comfy block heel, surprisingly versatile.

Find your version here:

Uterque Blue Velvet Sock, Uterque black snackskinAldo velvet sock boot, Stuart Weitzman Sock Boot,  Russell and Bromley Kitten Heel

3. A Wide Cropped Leg Trouser

Joseph Fitz Wide Leg £237

The reason you need them

Cropped trousers in khaki go with everything. They make white feel wearable, black feel less abrasive, red feel softer and allow pink to flourish. The cropped nature means you don’t have to worry about the hems getting dirty, they are wide enough so plenty of lunging can take place and an instant hit of modern dressing. Wear with trainers, chunky boots or of course sock boots!

Find your version here:

Jigsaw Hoxton ChinoArket Beige Cropped Wide Leg, ME + EM Red Flowy Cropped Trouser, Jigsaw Blue cropped Wide Leg,

4. A modern suit

ME + EM Grosgrain trim checked suit £299 Jacket £169 Trouser

The reason you need it

If you want to have true versatility in your wardrobe and feel ready for every occasion a modern suit is where its at. Think slightly oversized shape in the jacket and slim fitting trousers. Perfect as separates, the trousers on a Sunday with a slouchy jumper is pure heaven! To find out more about ME + EM check out this post here

Find your version here:

Kitri Pinstripe Suit,  Topshop Check suit, Racil Peach Suit , Zara Red Suit

5. A layering Jacket

Arket Liner £69

The reason you need it

The key to good layering is to have lightweight jackets that will do the job in the lighter months to keep you warm but come that chill they become a perfect layering cardigan piece. This thermal jacket does just that, its very lightweight and not at all bulky. The lack of waistband is also a very flattering trick over the tummy and hips.

Find your version here:

Arket Merino Box Jacket, Topshop Denim Shaket, Canada Goose Quilted Jacket, Uniqlo Double Face Jacket,

6. A long line white shirt

Kitri Studio White Shirt £79

The reason you need it

If you live in leggings a long line shirt will instantly make you feel polished. I always ere on the side of rebel and the classic white shirt can be too expected of my liking. This extra length feels modern and contemporary and is perfect for lengthening short torso’s like mine.

To find out more about Kitri check out this post from when I interviewed their founder.

Intelligent style : What I learnt from interviewing ME + EM

By | Home Page, Personal Style, Style Tips

Loulou Storey and Clare Hornby, Creative Director of ME + EM

Is this intelligent style?

The question that founder of ME + EM Clare Hornby, regularly asks her team at design meetings.

Having an eye on creating solutions for her customers is at the heart of everything Clare does when creating the new collection, that and the constant quest to lengthen legs.

This quest has meant that the brand has become very well known for their trousers, being at the heart of how ME + EM is improving the quality of our everyday wardrobes. Their recent press endorsement has been extensive including Claudia Winkleman who has been shouting endorsement of their subtle kick flare; all in all their trousers fit like a dream.

From my experience, trousers are the piece that so many women find a challenge in their wardrobe as they struggle to get the right and flattering fit. Pockets in the right place, fabric they can wash time and time again. Tailored trousers, whether wide leg, cropped or flared are now an everyday fashion must have and ME + EM are helping women step away from the skinny jeans and become more confident with trying a new silhouette. Essentially building a perfectly pitched smart casual wardrobe and supporting you in everything you do throughout your day.

What has become their most iconic piece and the staple that will always be in the ME + EM collection is their side stripe trouser, perfectly & precisely placed to the front of the thigh to ensure that your legs are given a narrow and more flattering appearance. You can choose your strength from the bright red with the pale blue and cream stripe which make a real fashion statement through to the more subtle wide leg black trouser with grosgrain stipe and gold press studs or even have that nod to a trend in in their palazzo pant that are the perfect attire for any new or soon to be mum.

The iconic status of their clothes stretches beyond the trousers, with white shirts and cashmere jumpers given an intelligent update. The white shirts come in 2 lengths depending on whether you would like a layer poking out at the bottom or whether you need minimal bulk when tucked in. Of course the extra length has been carefully considered with the longer-length hem finished with side slits that elongate the leg as well as allow you to easily tuck in the front.

The cashmere jumper in hot pink is striking and would add a touch of edge to every outfit, perfectly paired with denim, leather or khaki. The cropped and boxy style offers a great nod to a waist especially if this is a challenging area for you.

However the pièce de résistance was the prince of wales check suit that I chose to wear on the evening. The oversized masculine style blazer brought the suit sharply into 2018, the crop, slim cut trousers with their rebellious and disruptive red stripe were a dream to wear. The slanted zips flattered the silhouette and despite being sat throughout the interview the trouser had minimal creases at the end.

Here are my TOP 5 intelligent pieces from ME+EM; stapes you need in your wardrobe:

Grosgrain Trim Checked Blazer

Cashmere Box Jumper

Longline White Cotton Shirt

Side Stripe Man pant

Stud detail man pant

Khaki : The neutral everyone should wear

By | Home Page, Latest Articles, Personal Style, Style Tips

Khaki : The Neutral everyone should wear

Do you like Khaki? We can all get stuck in the old stories we tell ourselves and khaki gets a bad rap. Reminding many of cargo pants, parkas and All Saints (a band in the early 2000’s!)

Well think again, Khaki has had an update and here are the reasons why you should add it into your wardrobe:

  1. It’s a softer and more considerate neutral than black and navy on your skin tone.
  2. It is a neutral and goes with every colour in your wardrobe. Think about nature and how green sits with every flower you see.
  3. It has a great mix of timeless and modern vibes.

5 ways you could add it into your wardrobe today:

Wear it as a dress

Anything from modern fabrics to fluid florals. Khaki will lift your working wardrobe. I love this simple yet effective Me + Em dress.

This neck line is flattering for those with a larger and smaller bust.

Flattering sleeve length and the dipped hem at the back is a unique touch.

Me + Em Zip Front Dress

Wear it as a basic

Crew Necks

Camisoles

Breton Stripes

T-shirts.

Add a khaki basic to your wardrobe.

Me and Em Crew Neck Jumper

Wear it as a skirt

Pleated

A-line

Leather

Pencil.

Khaki in all the above is a winner.

Whistles Pleated Skirt

Wear it as a boxy Jacket

You see khaki as a bomber jacket a lot but this tailored boxy shape feels fresh and perfect for updating denim!

Wear it as a boot

More wearable that Camel, khaki is a great touch with black and blue.

Love the double tab detail on these by new brand Nubikk

What I learnt from interviewing Kitri Studio: The secret to being distinctive everyday

By | Home Page, Personal Style, Style Tips

Can you dress distinctive and unique everyday?

Is it even possible to showcase you, to be original everyday, to shine at your best day in day out?

Or is this a ridiculous standard and perhaps more importantly an exhausting commitment to try and be different, distinctive and unique everyday?

And after interviewing Kitri founder, Haeni Kim I think Kitri is the brand that could help you feel distinctive.

Kitri is not just another brand offering more of the same. Kitri is offering a solution to your everyday style challenges. That ongoing challenge of how the hell do you look good for work and feel glamorous for that evening event.

Lipstick could give you a helping hand, a pair of heels in your bag might also ramp up your energy but in fact what Kitri is offering is that you start your day in an item of clothing that will give you confidence that will endure. It will bend and shift to your whole day and ensure that you are expressing YOU with wild abandon.

But hold on a minute before you go shopping…..

Follow these 3 steps to achieve style distinctiveness

I believe it can be done but it takes a few steps:

Step 1: INSPIRE yourself. You need to understand what it is you love and the direction you want to take your style in. Check out my own Style Revolution board on Pinterest to inspire you to start your own board.

Step 2: FOCUS your attention on finding 3 new pieces that you will WANT to wear everyday and that make you feel excited to put on, that give you that ‘ooooh yea’ feeling. Really hone in on what is missing from your wardrobe and is going to inspire those dark winter mornings.

Step 3: MIX the new with the old. I see it happen a lot people go on a big shop and then they only wear the new but to really elevate the old they’ve got to work together.

These 3 steps will make being distinctive everyday a lot more achievable because you are less likely to make mistakes .

Here are the 4 pieces that have stolen my heart:

Isadora Silk Midi Dress

Roland Tuxedo Jumpuit

Odelie Red Wrap Dress

Pink Cable Knit hoodie

Enjoy exploring a new brand today and find your very own distinctive and unique style that will ensure you look good at 8am and 8pm!

This blog post has the best shopping tip EVER.

By | Home Page, Latest Articles, Personal Style, Style Tips

I bet your inbox is currently full of the latest items to buy? Full of shops pulling you into buy the latest trends.

But you are still left feeling lost about what to buy and overwhelmed with choice but underwhelmed with what you find?

At this time of year there is so much talk of party wear and the plethora of sequinned and bejewelled pieces that we fall for but we know from years gone by we only wear once.

We can get so excited about the glamour of it all; The wining and dining and the social occasions fill our calendar to the brim but it does bring with it more stress on what to wear.

An expensive time of year when we don’t need to waste any more money.

So how do we get better at shopping?

and ensure that we buy clothes that last beyond the festive season?

I learnt this trick recently and now teach it to those I work with and I would like to share with you.

So here we go….

Ready???

The secret to successful shopping is to:

‘Search for the treasure’.

Now I’m not encouraging you to become a pirate although maybe a fashion pirate could look quite cool but to give you more clarity let me set the scene:

It’s Tuesday morning, You have a party on Thursday night after work. You know you should have worked out what to wear but it just felt overwhelming so you kept pushing it to the back of your mind but now the time is pressing. You’ve got to get it sorted

You have 3 options:

  1. Wear the same black sequin top with your jeans that you’ve worn to every party for the last 3 years and is going bald from the sequins falling off.
  2. Head to the shops and see what they have and hope you find something (in the 45 minutes you can free up).
  3. Don’t go to the party.

Now the third option is a consideration but not really an option as its a work do. You have to show willing to your team and there are some interesting people there that you want to meet.

On to the first option which is doable but it fills you with a sense of heaviness and ‘not quite rightness’. A balding sequin top isn’t filling you with Xmas cheer.

So the second option it is….again! Off to the messy shops we go, not knowing where to start or what to buy.

Your wardrobe is full of clothes that you bought in a hurry, that solved a problem in the moment but has caused you disappointment long term.

So to ensure you don’t keep repeating the same problem over and over again go shopping with the intention that ‘Theres always one special treasure to seek out’.

To ensure the ‘it’ll do pieces’ stay away from your wardrobe and you only buy items that successfully express YOU then start searching for that special piece on the rail.

The item that will help us to feel unique and true to ourselves does exist, I promise!

The power of going shopping with the intention of finding that one special item on the rail helps us to enter the shops with positivity and hope. Something that is missing when people hit the shops as opposed to the usual desperation and disappointment that so many have.

Search for the treasured piece, the item that will add magic back into our lives and skim over the ‘it’ll do pieces’.

When you enter the shop, enter with curiosity and with the intention that you are there to find your treasure. The piece that will help lift your outfitting and your soul. The piece that when you put it on year after year you shout YES!

The reason that this trick works so well is because of 2 reasons.

First you are shopping with a positive intention, that energy and focus will reward you. The more we set intention in our lives the more we will get back exactly what we want and need. You are setting a higher standard for yourself.

Secondly you are connecting with yourself, your identity and your needs. It becomes a personal mission not just a practical fulfilment. When you try clothes on, it no longer is a question of ‘it’ll do’ but instead gives you the ‘ooooooooh yea’ feeling. Follow that!

Important note: If you walk around the shops with this intention and curiosity and you only come across ‘it’ll do’ pieces then you are in the wrong shop. Its time for you to find a new shop to treasure. Widen your search and step in somewhere new!

Good luck with your hunt, your mission and finding your treasures.

& once you get to the party have a boogie for me!!

6 ways to rediscover your identity

By | Home Page, Latest Articles, Personal Style, Style Tips

Credited Hattie Stewart

Have you lost your sense of identity? Do you know how to find it?

It’s amazing what we put up with. Day after day living a life that only just will do and feeling disconnected from our identity. I see it over and over again, incredible women who allow themselves a second rate life, allow themselves to sit in the shadows and hide away in clothes that are ill fitting, worn out and confirm their feelings of unworthiness.

Recently I was working with a truly beautiful and inspiring women who i’d been coaching for the last few months. She’d come to me at her lowest ebb but she’d been open to finding a new path.

There we were on the Kings Road in Peter Jones, a couple of hours into her session. She was trying on clothes she never thought she could pull off or have the confidence to wear, when she suddenly turned to me and said with a touch of sadness & regret; ‘i’ve just realised I’ve been hiding in the shadows for 20 years’. We paused for a moment both of us with a lump in our throats and as that sunk in her look changed to one of determination and she said ‘no more’.  With that the style lesson stepped up a notch and we really got to work on carving out the confident identity she had been desiring for so long.

It really is possible to see yourself in a new light, one you never thought possible. It may feel overwhelming but it actually just starts with a few small steps:

1. RECOGNISE & ACKNOWLEDGE

Coming out of the shadows begins with an initial moment of recognition that you are not where you want to be. It has to start there, with honesty & vulnerability.

2. INVITE CHANGE

So often we replay the same day over and over but is it actually working for you? Welcome in a new way of living and get some momentum going by starting with a small switch. Put some earrings back into an old piercing, wear an alternative pair of shoes to your normal choice, spritz a different perfume.

3. HAVE AN OOPS MOMENT

An oops is better than a what if. Give it a try and don’t beat yourself up about it. Reconnecting with what makes us feel good means that we have to make some mistakes. It’s not how often you get it right, its how open you are to self discovery.

4. POWER DRESSING

This is not 80’s corporate suiting i’m talking about. Power dressing is the items in your wardrobe that really shape your identity. Put another way they’re the clothes you own that make you want to puff out your chest, hold your head higher and shout ‘this is me’. Connect with them and then ask yourself why? Why do these do this for me and then seek out more of that!

5. PLAY DRESS UP

Time to have fun with your dressing and pull out pieces that you’ve not worn in a while, match new  colours together, borrow your sisters dress and outfit with your wardrobe. Whatever it is to get your creative juices flowing and champion the power of  ‘I wonder if this might work together’.

6. GO BACK TO SCHOOL

Until you understand yourself & discover more about you, your clothing is redundant. Functional at best. Knowledge is the key. Take on learning about style with an open and forgiving heart. Remove the need to just ‘buy more’ or ‘buy new’ but start learning what suits your figure and your colourings by becoming more aware of when you get compliments or when you feel that power in your clothes.

Mindful dressing is the key and connecting with our own truth is at the centre of that.

If now is the time for self discovery and you are ready to enter down that path, a life out of the shadows with a confident sense of your true identity is a lot easier and a far more fulfilling way to live.

My Mumbod reality and the desire to get into my pre-baby jeans

By | Home Page, Personal Style, Style Tips

20 months ago I was overweight, powerless, lost and helpless. A very confused new mum definitely not fitting into her pre-pregnancy jeans, in fact hardly fitting into her maternity jeans. My head was full of depressive, limiting thoughts, my heart felt overwhelmed and my body felt heavy, lethargic and foreign.

My life had turned upside down, everything had changed; I’d moved cities, bought a new house, left my career to start my own business and had my daughter, Lola. I put on 3.5 stone whilst pregnant mainly down to my love of mint magnums and ice cream and following her birth I didn’t recognise my reflection in the mirror. The life changes I had made were meant to enrich me but instead I felt trapped; trapped in my body, my mind and my home. I was suffering with anxiety attacks, a constant ball of worry and full of desperation. I no longer knew who I was and I didn’t recognise my reflection.

At a time that I thought I would feel more connected to myself, my femininity, my future, I felt disgusted by myself. I was stiff, heavy and exploding with rashes and spots. My stretch marks on my stomach were enflamed and on fire, my thighs rubbed and my stomach was a soft empty sack that hung over my caesarean scar. I stupidly thought my body would just pop back but the obsession with those mint magnums and ice creams were clinging to me for dear life!

I was in shock and I was very frightened that I would be stuck in this strangers body forever. I felt low and at a loss and disconnected from myself and my daughter. I tried eating well but nothing seemed to change. I kept hearing that if you breast fed the weight would fall off. I struggled with breast feeding, managing 10 weeks and in fact my weight kept going up.

I went to the doctors for help, perhaps it was my thyroid to blame, perhaps there was another reason but I was told that ‘it sometimes happens when you get older, you know when you look at photos of old school friends and they are just bigger, it happens’.

I felt very despondent, He’d given up on me, I had nearly too. Feeling very low, very emotional but still with a touch of resilience I refused to back down.

So I started searching for HOPE to find the old me. I started with my mindset rather than my body. I couldn’t cope with feeling like a martyr and depressed, this wasn’t me. I started reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic.

This quote in the book stuck with me:

“And when you sense a faint potentiality for happiness after such dark times you must grab onto the ankles of that happiness and not let go until it drags you face-first out of the dirt – this is not selfishness, but obligation. You were given life; it is your duty to find something beautiful within life no matter how slight.”

I stopped watching the news, i couldn’t cope with that negativity. I then started looking after the inside, committing to eating one healthy meal a day and said no to cake where I could. I realised i was doing ALOT of self soothing with sugar and booze, more than I wanted to admit and so I cut back. Social media makes ‘wine a clock’ and ‘cake time” the mothers accepted nemesis but it wasn’t working for me.

Then I moved onto my body, I started getting my heart rate up, not just walking but introducing a 7min app workout in the house. I decided to show up for me. Small steps each day, which didn’t feel like much but it was all I could commit to with a new baby and I started to see some small progress.

My weight started to drop, very very slowly at first and then I found that my anxiety started to lessen, my hormones start to balance again, I started to feel a little lighter about the future. Positivity was creeping back in.

So where am I now?

Lola is about to turn 2. The benchmark of trying to get to my pre-baby weight and back into those pre-pregnancy jeans has happened in fact I am now stronger & healthier in mind and body than I was pre-Lola. I’ve lost 46lbs in total and I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been. The biggest change? I’ve learnt how to be consistent for the first time in my life, I am committed to me. I love doing Crossfit, although only go twice a week as that’s all I can commit to but that consistency makes a difference. Better than 4 times one week, none the next (the old me!). Creating these positive new habits have helped to built my new normal, to be a strong role-model for Lola but perhaps most importantly to be a strong role model for myself. This experience as hard as it was has created a more resilient me.

I’ve come to realise that its not about getting back to the old you but in fact its about creating the new you. The new improved, upgraded version. Life is about experiences, good and bad and how you bounce back from them. Motherhood is not easy but my goodness it has made me.

My name is Loulou Storey and I’m a style and confidence coach. I help women take control of their lives by feeling confident with their style and help them rewrite their own narratives and I have recently rewritten my own. I invite you to do the same.
